You are also feeling like your home never quite warms up, no matter how high you turn up the heating? Chances are, a lot of that cosy heat is sneaking out through your floors. In fact, up to 20% of heat loss happens this way—and that’s money slipping away too.

No need to worry about this anymore. Gift comfort to yourselves with floor insulation. It's a blanket under your feet, keeping your home warm while blocking out chilly draughts and damp air from below. The result? A warmer, comfier home and lower energy bills.

Most of the time, it’s only the ground floor that needs insulating. If there is a cold temperature in any place like a garage or under floor (basement), it can cause us to shiver. You need floor insulation, so that your rooms stay much warmer and much more comfortable.

Benefits of Floor Insulation

Keep Your Home Warmer

Heat may also be lost through the floor, sometimes by as much as 20%. Rooms feel warmer without cold spots and draughts. Indoor temperatures stay steadier warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Save Money on the Energy Bills

Heating costs usually fall, often between £45 and £120 a year depending on the property. Even small fixes, like sealing gaps around floorboards and skirting, can shave another £25–£30 off bills.

Protect Your Home and the Environment

Timber floors are better protected against damp, mould, and rot. Your carbon footprint shrinks by up to 240kg of CO₂ each year. Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings often improve

Choosing the Right Insulation for Your Floor

Concrete Floors

Concrete floors often feel cold underfoot, even when the heating’s on. The best fix is usually to add insulation from underneath (in the crawl space) so the insulation sits directly under the floor. Common choices are foil sheets or specialist foams — depending on space and moisture levels.

If you can’t get under the floor, insulation can be installed on top. Rigid foam boards work well, though the floor height will rise slightly, requiring minor adjustments to doors or skirtings. Either method prevents cold air from rising, keeping floors warmer in winter, rooms cooler in summer, and reducing energy bills.

Timber Floors

Wooden floors add charm, but older homes often lack insulation underneath, causing draughts. Breathable materials like mineral wool or rock wool are used to allow airflow.

If accessible, insulation is fitted between joists using netting or boards, keeping the floor surface unchanged. Vapour-permeable membranes may be added for proper ventilation. Proper insulation reduces draughts, keeps rooms warmer, and makes wooden floors more comfortable.

Other Floor Types

Suspended timber floors are common in homes built between 1850s–1950s, especially Victorian and Edwardian houses. Look for air bricks or ventilation bricks below floor level — a clear sign of suspended floors.

Important: Never block these bricks. They allow airflow that prevents wood rot and damp issues.
